Ethiopia to Host 2027 FIATA World Congress in Addis Ababa Highlighting Africas Growing Role in Global Logistics

The Ethiopian Freight Forwarder and Shipping Agents Association (EFFSAA) has been selected to host the prestigious 2027 FIATA World Congress, marking a historic milestone for both Ethiopia and the African continent. Marking the turn of a new century in FIATA’s history, the FIATA World Congress will take place in the vibrant Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

EFFSAA President Dawit Woubishet shared his thoughts on the significance of this achievement:

“This is not only a source of immense pride for Ethiopia but for Africa as a whole. We are honored and thrilled to have been given this extraordinary opportunity to host such a globally recognized event. The 2027 FIATA World Congress will be held in Addis Ababa, a city known for its rich culture, dynamic growth, and pivotal role in regional and international diplomacy.”

The 18th batch FIATA Diploma Training Began.

The Ethiopian Freight Forwarders and Shipping Agents Association (EFFSAA) has launched the 18th round of its FIATA Diploma training program in a weekend session. The 7th weekend class, which commenced on Saturday, October 12, 2024, has attracted close to 40 enthusiastic trainees.

Since its inception in 2017, EFFSAA has been instrumental in providing FIATA diploma training programs in Ethiopia. To date, over 300 individuals have successfully earned the internationally recognized FIATA Diploma, solidifying their expertise in the field of freight forwarding and logistics.

Fully Liberalizing the Logistics Sector to Foreign Investors Could Pose a Risk to Domestic Operators

According to Ato Dawit Woubishet, President of EFFSAA, before fully opening the logistics sector to foreign investors, the government shall plans to assist local investors in strengthening their capabilities. This approach is similar to the government’s strategy with Ethio-Telecom and banks, which were opened to foreign investment after undergoing reforms and becoming self-sufficient.

Ato Dawit emphasized that local investors should be given the opportunity to address any shortcomings in the logistics sector before it is fully opened to foreign competition.

Railway, Port Infrastructure Network Upgrade Needs USD 2.6bln_ Ministry Report

Experts at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics estimate the cost of a series of projects aimed at improving logistics infrastructure and upgrading the country’s railway networks at more than USD 2.6 billion.

A Ministry report dubbed ‘Reform Prospects for Ethiopia’s Railway and Surface Transport’ published this week provides an overview of the resources needed for diversifying port outlets in neighboring countries, upgrading the Ethio-Djibouti Railway, introducing railway safety standardization, and other capacity-building works.

The document highlights that operational, legislative, and institutional reform interventions are necessary to reform the country’s lacking railway, port, and trucking infrastructure networks. Investment needs are particularly high for operational level reforms, according to Ministry experts.

Operations interventions for the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, and operations interventions for ports and trucking, will require a whopping cumulative investment capital of over USD 2.6 billion.

Ethiopian Cargo appoints Dereje Derero as Managing Director

Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services has appointed Dereje Derero as the new Managing Director. The airline also announced the appointment of managers to drive expansion. “Their extensive experience and expertise will contribute significantly to the success and growth of our cargo operations,” says a LinkedIn post. Ethiopian Cargo operates a fleet of 16 dedicated freighters with 70 cargo destinations and over 135 passenger destinations. Ethiopian Airlines had announced an agreement with Boeing in March 2024 for the purchase of eight 777-9 passenger airplanes and the potential for up to 12 additional jets. Ethiopian Airlines’s selection of 777-9 jets positions the carrier as the first 777X customer in Africa and builds on its 2023 order for 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX airplanes to modernise and grow its fleet.
