Nominees of EFFSAA elected for higher positions of FIATA.
Two nominees of EFFSAA have been elected to lead higher positions of FIATA on the annual general meeting of the federation. The meeting was held virtually on the 18th of November 2021.
Ato Salahadin Khalifa, past President of EFFSAA and Ato Dawit Woubishet, current Vice-President of EFFSAA have become Chairperson of Region Africa and Middle East (RAME) of FIATA and Chairperson of Air Freight Institute (AFI) of FIATA respectively.
Salahadin who served EFFSAA for almost 9 years in various positions and led RAME-FIATA since January 2021, is the Founder and General Manager of Samatra Logistics & Shipping Plc, one of the biggest Logistics company in Ethiopia, which was established in October 1993. He is also the board member of different business organizations.
The other high-profile personality of EFFSAA, Dawit Woubishet, who started serving the Association as a vice chairperson since December 2020, has also been elected to lead the Air Freight Institute of FIATA. Dawit became the first African to get the opportunity to chair AFI. Aside from engaged in different activities of various institutes as a member of board of directors, Dawit is the Director of WoubGet Holdings which includes one of the member company of EFFSAA, Tradepath International Plc.

Bulk Cargo Handling Warehouses are Ready for Operation
Warehouses constructed near the railway terminal at Modjo dry port for the purpose of handling bulk cargoes especially fertilizers from Djibouti, has been completed and ready to handle the import of fertilizers.
The two warehouses, built with high quality K-span construction technology and ready for service, cost more than 98 million birr.
The warehouses are 1,600 square meters each and can handle 10,000 metric tons of fertilizer at a time.

Cool Port Addis Project Launched
A new fruits, vegetables and horticulture product logistics port is to b e built in Modjo under the National Cool Logistics Network, which is a joint project between the governments of Ethiopia and the Netherlands.
The port, which will be known as Cool Port Addis, will be built with infrastructure that is suited for fruits, vegetables and horticulture produce. “The development of a National Cool Logistics Network is a strategic project and vital for many economic activities in Ethiopia” said Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics.

Ministry Scraps Trade License Certification Requirements
The Ministry of Trade & Regional Integration has announced a significant reduction in the types of businesses that are required to present certificates of competency from various government regulatory bodies to acquire a trade license. Previously, the requirements applied to 52 various lines of business but that number has been lowered to 10 following a letter from the Ministry instructing trade bureaus to do so on November 15, 2021. Among those that still need to present certificates are importers of medical equipment, as well as food and chemical products. Meat processors and animal feed producers will also need to hold certification from the relevant government body when applying for a trade license. Ministry officials expect the move to facilitate the ease of doing business in the country.

FIATA General Meeting 2021
The 2021 FIATA General Meeting was, for the second year, held virtually on 18 November 2021 as the pandemic has continued to constrain face-to-face meetings. Despite this, FIATA, in 2021, delivered to Members through internet connectivity in excess of 120 virtual meetings for operational bodies. The General Meeting, which would normally take place during the FIATA World Congress, was attended by 184 delegates from 76 economies, which was positive proof of FIATA Members’ commitment to FIATA and their mastery of the internet meeting environment, said FIATA President Mr Basil Pietersen.
One of the key highlights of the General Meeting 2021 was the affirmation of delegates into all roles in FIATA which saw many new faces in the 12 elected Vice Presidents of the Extended Board and the respective Chairs of the 13 FIATA Institutes and Bodies. The newly elected delegates are expected to bring a fresh focus and rejuvenation to FIATA, with greater diversity in age and gender, in line with the FIATA Reset Program.

Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year Award 2021 announced at final online event
FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations and TT Club, international freight transport insurer, revealed this year’s global winner of the Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year Award (YIFFYA) during today’s final online event.
FIATA and TT Club are proud to announce that Justin Goedhart, the regional winner of Region Africa and Middle East, representing SAAFF, South Africa, has been awarded the title of Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year.
“With his dissertation, presentation and video today focused on the international shipment of rhinos and large ball mill, Justin has demonstrated exemplary understanding, knowledge and passion for his profession – showing how the next generation is truly resilient and adequately equipped to meet the current and future challenges of the supply chain”, said Michael Yarwood, TT Club’s Managing Director, Loss Prevention.

Djibouti, Ethiopia ink corridor management alliance
Djibouti and Ethiopia sign an accord for the establishment of a Corridor Management Authority.
A delegation led by Dagmawit Moges, Minister of Transport and Logistics (MoTL) has paid a two-day visit to the major port outlet, Djibouti, starting from November 17.
The information obtained from Djibouti indicated that the meeting mainly focused on a number of issues pertaining to ports, corridor and logistics and reflected the strengthening of the gains made and the means of launching new initiatives.
La Nation reported that the meeting not only responds to the desire of the two countries to discuss but also to reflect together on ways and means of strengthening cooperation in the field of transport.
The bilateral meeting was concluded on Thursday, with the adoption of a roadmap for the establishment of a Corridor Management Authority, signed by the two Ministers of Transport.
The port handling in Djibouti has significantly increased in the past few years, while the consignment transporting to Ethiopia is growing with less stay in Djibouti.
The details of the agreement and the exact operation of the upcoming authority are yet to be revealed.

Somaliland launches revamped Berbera Airport
Somaliland, the self-declared independent region north of Somalia, on Saturday officially launched a renovated Berbera International Airport, seeking a slice of the growing aviation earnings in the region.
President Muse Bihi, alongside Somaliland government officials and a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), cut the ribbon, officially announcing that the airport, locally known as madaarka caalamiga ah ee Berbera, is open to commercial operations.
The airport is located a short distance off the port town of Berbera.
Ethiopia, which imports most of its goods through the Djibouti Port, had earlier expanded ties to Somaliland, having stakes in its ports. But under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the policy shifted to Mogadishu where they signed four MoUs to develop ports, including those in Somaliland.
DP world, a leading ports operator from the UAE, has rebuilt and injected capital in the port of Berbera.
Officials from Transportation Infrastructure Services (TIS), a company that specialises in development and management, stated that the UAE had injected $55 million in rebuilding of the Berbera International Airport for passenger and cargo services.
