Container shortage overburdens ESLSE
Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE) says the effect of global box shortage is scrambling its operation from time to time. Container freight rates price spikes by triple.
The international business that mainly derives from maritime sector is becoming critical in related with mismatch on demand and supply. International reports indicated that there is no sign of easing of freight rates as demand exceeds available slots and containers.
The export from China and Far East has increased by all actors including the western world thus the heavy congestion has occurred on Chinese ports.
“The effect has become severe from time to time. The activity of ESLSE, which had registered marvelous performance on container handling in the recent past, has significantly slowdown. We used to be delivering containerized cargos effectively but clients and our operations are now affected by the shortage. Ports and shipping operators are using it as a lucrative advantage to impose huge amount of additional sum on the logistics operation,” Roba Megersa, CEO of ESLSE.

The 2021 FIATA World Congress is postponed due to COVID-19
FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarding Associations and Association Member Forward Belgium announce the postponement of the 2021 FIATA World Congress to 2023, as a result of the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The decision to postpone the FIATA congress this year was not taken lightly, but the safety and health of participants coming from all parts of the world must take precedence and we thank Forward Belgium for their cooperation. We look forward to welcoming the freight forwarding family to our FIATA World Congress at a more suitable time. On behalf of the FIATA Presidency, I would also like to thank the Asociación Panameña de Agencias de Carga for their understanding and consideration in agreeing to postpone the 2023 edition of the FIATA World Congress.” said FIATA Director General, Dr Stéphane Graber.
The next FIATA World Congress will take place from 13-16 September 2022 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The exact dates of the 2023 congress in Brussels, Belgium, will be announced at a later date.
Due to the postponement of the 2021 edition of the FIATA World Congress, the FIATA General Meeting 2021 will take place virtually on Thursday 18 November.

WLP Expands in Africa
The World Logistics Passport (WLP), the world’s first freight loyalty program designed to boost global trade and enhance the efficiency and resilience of global supply chains, is expanding in Africa – with Ethiopia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and Guinea registering as Gateway countries.
With countries looking to build back global trade volumes, the benefits to businesses in Ethiopia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and Guinea includes a significant reduction in their supply chain costs and improved speed to market for their exports and imports. This is achieved through the over 130 benefits provided by WLP to traders and freight forwarders who expect to have an annual increase in trade volumes on average of up to 5-10%.
Ethiopia’s participation is aligned with the Government’s ambitious economic reform program and commitment to upgrade national transport and logistics capabilities, including the recent strategic partnership with DP World to further develop the Berbera Corridor.
On 08 June the WLP will host its inaugural Global Summit, the central objective of which is to further international cooperation in order to offer businesses the right regulatory conditions, information and incentives to unlock the full potential of global trade. Global leaders from business, government, and international organizations will share perspectives on the key trends shaping the freight and logistics industry, as well as take stock of the WLP’s achievements to date.
